Waldrons Thursday

Paddy Waldron arrived late Wednesday night and stayed in our spare room. The mission today was to meet Amie Sterling (nee Waldron-Hamilton), look at her collection of photos from the Ashfort estate, visit the house called Cartron and two nearby graveyards with Waldron graves. Doug's Waldron ancestors lived in this area and in both of these houses after they had to sell the Dromellan Castle (Franham Estate) mentioned on yesterday's blog.

This is Ann Sheridan, she and her husband manage the Ashfort estate, with Amie Sterling (nee Waldron-Hamilton).

Paddy was good company and had a lot of the Waldron history in his head. Here he is at the Ashfort gate, and a picture of the gate hinge!

Amie was also a very interesting lady with about 6 photo albums of life in the big house at Ashfort.

She had a lot of portrait photos that we could copy, here are a few.

We went to Cartron about 3pm and the owners let us have a look around. This is the house Capt Charles Waldron was born in. He and his wife and children left for Australia to found the "Waldrons of Illawarra" and the NZ branch of the family.

Then it was out to the churchyard at Annaduff to view the Waldron vault.

The last visit was out past the village of Hillstreet to the graveyard with two Waldron graves. We took cleaning equipment and found the following, including two Waldron family coats-of-arms with the three bulls. The inscription reads:
"This monnument was erected in memory of Mr Michael Walldron who deeparted his life ye 2nd day of April 1716 in his 65th year of his age his youngest daughter Ann Mitchell was interred ye 19th May in year 1715 in ye 29th year of her age.
Francis Waldron, wife to Mr Michael Waldron jnr dyed the 27th July 1725 in the 30th yeare of her age. Mrs Jane Waldron, wife to Mt Michael waldron Snr dyed in April 1723 in the 72nd year of her age. Mr Michael Waldron jnr dyed the ? day of April 1757 in the 48th year of his age."

Evening arrived and it was time to part from all these nice people. Paddy took us out to an excellent dinner in Carrick-on-Shannon and headed South on his 3 hour journey home.
