Amsterdam Wednesday

Gordon dropped us off at the Vianen bus station this morning, and we made our own way to Utrecht Centraal train station. There we caught the train to Amsterdam for a few hours before continuing to Bovenkarspel, 2km from Enkhuizen.

Our last visit to Amsterdam was nearly 40 years ago. Then there were a few long-haired hippies - today it seemed 'seedier' with lots of 'coffee shops' offering drugs. We walked on to the Dam, which was fairly peaceful, apart from the sideshow that had been set up, including a couple of alarming rides!

We walked back near the station and took a canal boat tour, which gave a better view of the old houses, warehouses and houseboats. These were the sights that we had been looking for.

The smallest house.

This old ship 'The Amsterdam' is a replica of one sunk in 1749.

Near the end of the canal trip, you could see the multi-story bike park and some other bike storage near the train station.

We continued our train trip to Bovenkarspel and have 3 nights in Hotel-Restaurant 'Het Roode Hert' which dates from 1595. Gordon & Geertje have joined us and here we are having 'ontbijt' (breakfast).

This old hotel is lovely. There are more than a dozen old clocks in the rooms that make up the restaurant, as well as sporting trophies old paintings, and antique furniture. The accomodation is fairly basic, but clean and the beds are comfortable.

Unfortunately it's a wet day - we can't really complain as we've had wonderful weather for most of the time.
