South Devon
Sunday we headed out of Bridford to the South Coast, firstly to Teignmouth. It is a pretty town, built on a river mouth, has a beach, pier and remarkably red rocks in the cliffs. Here are some pictures of the pier, and its collection of games machines.
We headed on down the coast to Torquay, which was very photogenic but half of England had arrived for their Sunday at the beach and we could not find anywhere to park the car.
We looked in on the ruins of Castle Berry Pomeroy, reputed to still be haunted by the sounds of galloping horses as two of the Pomeroy brothers rode to their deaths over the ramparts!
Then we headed inland to Totnes, where we spotted some morris dancers. Morris dancing dates from the 15th to 17th centuries, and has had a revival in recent years, even women are allowed to do it now. This was a good chance to have a pint while we watched. Julie tried the local 'scrumpy', a rough draught cider made from withered apples. She declared it 'the worst drink I have ever had', and it was tipped out on a bush.
Gertrude (GPS) took us home. We can now spot the one-way lanes coming up and ignore her 'turn left', knowing a better road is coming.
We took a walk around the meadow attached to our cottage, gave the Shetlands an apple and picked a few blackberries.
