Dartmoor and Plymouth, Devon
Monday's trip involved leaving our cottage on this very narrow road (the usual way out). As on every other day we encountered tractors and cars to squeeze by. The first part has grass growing in the middle and no passing places.
We then headed towards Dartmoor Prison, situated in the middle of the Devon Moors. (The Moor on the river Dart). The moors comprise rolling hills, a lot of granite, peat, wandering stock and mist. A very damp climate here.
We visited the Dartmoor Prison museum. Prisoners were shipped from here to Tasmania from 1787, the 'first fleeters' in Australia. It is still an operating prison with 1000 or more inmates.
We then headed for Plymouth, (the mouth of the river Plym) to see the harbour where the Pilgrims left for America and Captain Cook for NZ. New Plymouth is named after this town.
