St Austell, Truro and Golden Manor

Quite a big day today. Doug commented that we have travelled 1200 miles in our car in the last 12 days - what you might call a 'Busman's Holiday' ! The tiredness was being to show as we travelled down yet another narrow country lane in search of Golden Manor, and ended up in a farmyard. We gave up early on, went to Truro, then tried again on the way home.

We set off this morning travelling to Truro via St Austell.Thomas Trudgian had been born there (my great-great grandfather) so we thought that there might be a possibility of finding some tombstones. It was a funny set up, all the tombstones were set out on about 3 rows around the edge of a sort of garden. We found 2 Trudgeons, and a number of Pearces. I'm not sure if they are relatives. The church was quite a bit further down the road in the town centre.

We reached the Family History Society before lunch and got down to work. There were 5 or 6 big box files labelled 'Trudgeon'. I went through those while Doug tackled the data bases. The boxes had an amazing amount of stuff. There were pockets and pockets of all kinds of things - some original birth certificates, wills, etc. It was very difficult to know where to start. I can't say that we achieved a lot but we have copies of things to spend more time looking at. One thing though - I found another Sibella.I wonder if my Great-grandmother Catherine Sebella was named after her? That could be a link back to Golden Manor.Doug managed to fill in 3 more marriages. We also have pages and pages of births to work through.

We found Golden Manor on our way home. Lovely isn't it.

The usual blocked country lanes on the way home. A few photos to show you. Imagine doing this every day!

Narrow lanes certainly bring back memories of driving to Axminster from Ilminster each day. Sometimes I could see the tops of the milk trucks above the hedgerows and work out a place to pull over!!
Did you like the gate posts?
