South Island trip Day 1

After an uneventful trip to Auckland, yesterday morning, we got to the airport in plenty of time to eat our lunch at Airport Viewing park.

We found carpark M and left Corolla a place in the sun for 10 days until we return. We still had time to waste before checking in to board our Air NZ ATR72 to Nelson.

The plane was full. There seemed to be plenty coughing passengers
far too close to us. I wished I had Diana's chiffon scarf!

Sitting on the right hand side gave us mostly sea views with a glimpse of the Taranaki coast and Farewell Spit. The left hand side passengers had a good view right into the crater of Mt Egmont!

We finally got picked up by Omega Rental Cars shuttle and were presented with a small dusty Toyota. There are chronic water shortages here. Doug needed help to start the keyless car as it didn't just go like our Nissan EV. You actually have to start the engine first! The lady hid a smile and waved us on our way.

We had also forgotten how to make the GPS work so were then lost until we found the supermarket by accident and got directions to the motel, whose street was not shown on the local map. (We got lost in the supermarket too - it was huge! I think that travel fatigue was creeping up on us.)
