The Rover Heads South

Monday morning dawned wet, wet, wet! We finished piling our gear into the back of the Land Rover, set the windscreen wipers on 'fast' and pointed towards the South Island.

South of Tokoroa, we found The Jim Currie reserve - specially built for days like this, with a roof over the picnic table.

Monday afternoon
When we got to Taupo, we popped in to see my sister and brother-in-law. They had the fire going and lovely hot soup ready. Not at all like March!!! After a good catch-up we travelled on, around Lake Taupo to my brother and sister-in-law's place at Motuoapa. (A little north of Turangi)

Tuesday

It was a pretty wild night. Quite a few people in Taupo were left without power. We went for a walk down to the marina at Motuoapa to see how the boats had fared. David and another yachty were concerned about this Noelex, and spent some time retying ropes.

There were signs that the lake had been up quite high. The shore was washed away in places and pumice and lakeweed deposited.

Heading back, we visited other bays; walked and enjoyed the sunshine.

On the way back to Tokaanu we checked out this old wharf - used in the early days before the road was made. We then moved on to the Tokaanu hot springs.

Apart from hot pools, there was a track open to the public, where we could see boiling pools and blooping mud. There were also ruins of baths from the old days; also places that were still being used by locals for cooking.

The weather was beautiful by the time we got back to Motuoapa. Miriam and Ken called in after dinner. What a lovely first day of our holiday.
