Doug had a whole day off, so we packed a picnic and set off to see where the mighty Waikato meets the sea.
The picturesque Tuakau Bridge crosses the river before you reach Port Waikato. There is a nice boat ramp and picnic ground beside the water.
We were impressed with the lovely surf beach on the coast. There was lots of activity - surfers, fishermen and people walking along the iron sands.
We back tracked a little to a nice picnic spot beside the river. There were magnificent sand dunes between us and the sea.
After lunch we set out to walk to the mouth of the river. We thought that once we got to the top of the dune, we would be able to see it.
It was like being on the moon! The dunes stretched on forever.
A 'sand fall'.
We abandoned our attempt to get to the actual mouth of the river - it was too far. Instead we walked back along the tidal mudflats checking out the local fishermen as we went.
